Groundhog Day – The Ode to the Emergency Fund

Dug my grave again. Did that over the length of a few months – slightly over a year. I thought I could control it, but somehow the lull of easy money has sung a song so sweet that I have allowed myself to sign on the dotted line, letting tomorrow take care of itself.

Credit is the death of me. Why is it that I keep doing things that I know I should have never done? Is regret even enough of a painful feeling to stop me from doing this yet again? The Edu loan I took was ok, but the credit card that I had.. man, at first, it was sweet. Now its just a big ass nightmare.

Had a big headache last night. It was more of stress related head pain where the sides of my forehead felt as if something was squeezing them. All due to the state I find myself in. Come to think about it, all of the stress that I have felt over the years in one shape or another has the same root cause – Money. Lack of planning, which leads to a lack of reserves, which then lead to going to the bank to make a deal with the devil. Regret is a pointless emotion to feel once the deed has already been done.

So, what do you do now? Pay it off, slowly. I’ll need to build me a micro emergency fund of $1000. I’ll do whatever I need to do to get that done. Next, pay off my credit card as quickly as possible. After that, pay off the Edu loan, which is kinda small compared to the credit card. Once all that is cleared, then I will build a mini Emergency fund of $5,000 to $10,000. A fully funded emergency fund is $20,000.. but that is still a long way from where I am at. Got to build up my savings ASAP. Living paycheck to paycheck is a stressful way to live, especially when the majority of your roles in the industry you are in are contract roles, where they can fire you in a moments notice, hence the need for the Emergency fund.

I’m a debt slave.. hear me complain about sucky jobs all day long, all while rattling the chains that I so gladly wear not so long ago. Now, I’ve got my plan.. just got to follow through with it. It may take the rest of the year or longer, but its better then where I am currently at. Go build your emergency funds, friend, so you may not share the same fate as mine. Hell, just the value of the avoided stress alone makes the Emergency Fund 4 times the value of the money you have in it. Got to heed the advise of my parents, who have walked this road a million times before, and build your savings and be debt free.

Can I pass this mission? I’ve plotted a rough way-point going to the desired destination. Now, it’s all a matter of execution.. so this is where I stop typing, and start getting to work.

On the New Year and The Plan for that Year.

Ah… the new years day. Its the time for you to celebrate the year that has passed and the achievements that have been accomplished over the last 12 months. Its a time to look over all the things that needs to be done in the next year, to plot forth the vision, the plan of action and the micro-steps in order to make the whole thing possible.

When it comes to financial goals, however, I have been reading a whole lot about it and looking at ways to diagnose my poor ass out of living paycheck to paycheck. I am now going to initiate a savings plan to save my own sorry ass from the totally pointless crutches of consumer debt. I have to work on saving my money and building my mini emergency fund for the rainy day that may come in the horizon. If I get my bonus in the end of the year, I am going to put that in my Emergency fund as well. I need to build a big enough buffer so that if a job loss is imminent, I would still have enough to last me a few months. In any case, I’m gonna follow the modified Dave Ramsey approach of saving a micro-emergency fund of $1000 first. That $1000 won’t help you if there are major issues but it will give a bit of security to keep your mind at ease. The potato diet will also help but it’s not going to work for the long haul. That’s why I am going to use excel to visualize the goal and then build it up via small monthly increments. Cut back on the bullshit spending and probably no holidays until a somewhat fully fleshed out emergency fund of $10,000 is built up.

2018 will also be the year where I will also do my best to build up multiple streams of income, so that it will increase my savings to build a rock hard financial foundation. With that built up, the rest will eventually follow. Success in one area of life will breed success in other areas in life. It might take longer, but it is sure as hell well worth the effort.

I am now in the midst of going through my class 3A lessons for the Auto-car license. I want to get that over and done with by mid this year. I have been delaying this for so long due to the lack of funds. The funds is still lacking but this is the sort of thing you need to do while you are still young and able to learn.

I’ll have to remod for module for IDDD, which will start on March. Going to have to complete the exams by May, and then we’ll see how things goes. I am going for a degree, but I am kinda split between 2 different courses from 2 different universities, both of which is offered by Kaplan. I have signed up for the Bachelors of Science in Computer Forensics, Information Security and Business Information Systems (Double Major) under Murdoch University towards the end of last year, but because I did not pass my IDDD module, I had to postpone my entry to the course. Kaplan also provides another course, the Bachelor of Science in Forensic Computing by University of Portsmouth. Its an Honours Degree, which some say is better. Its about $5000 cheaper then the Double Major that is offered by Murdoch University. My diploma classmates were telling me to join the Portsmouth one since its cheaper and it has fewer modules to study for (only 11 modules to slog through). Come to think about it, I guess they are right. Most employers don’t really care about the paper anyway. They only care about you having a degree. Hopefully I will able to do that later this year. In the meantime, I’m gonna stack that money for the sweet sweet Emergency Fund.

I know it’s kinda late with the month being halfway done, so Happy New Year everybody and may you achieve your goals for a better and brighter future.

Yeah… March

Hello my old blog.

I had not been keeping tabs on writing again. I let this slide, again.

Just how the heck am I going to be a prolific writer, I don’t know.

Lets just say the new job that I got in September has left me relatively spent at the end of the day. Nothing feels better then vegging out in front of my overly powered beast of a PC and just do aimless Google searching all the way till the wee hours.

Oh well, what to do.

I’ll be sure to remember to continue writing.

Selamat Hari Raya Haji

..and for the non-Muslims, Happy Holidays! (a bit too late, but whatever)

It’s now 3:00AM, when I should be asleep. The day has gone by and I’ve got a bike Road Revision later at 8:20pm. I’ll write another update later on, maybe when I unwind during lunch. I’ve been helping out my friend setup his site with WordPress, using my host. It’s up but there’s a bit of stuff that needs to be ironed out before letting it get “revealed to the world”, I guess.

Work is going great, learning more and getting to know more of the people and my function within the whole shebang.

Installed this dark theme as you could see, its abit cleaner and looks more polished then the older one. I’m liking this alot as its easier on the eyes for long form periods of reading. Most bloggers will want to follow a set format, but I prefer it to have a more personal feel to it.

Anyway, I should be sleeping, and go into Snorlax mode. Goodnite / early morning!

New Job, New Start.

I left my previous role with a small SI (Systems Integrator – a catch all term for an IT services outsourcing firm) and am now working at Singtel (not directly, but I’m based at their location). Found the job after 3 weeks of hardcore job searching. I didn’t want to leave my previous role (I liked the job, the knowledge + skillset gained and my colleagues) but circumstances beyond my control has pushed me to make the decision that I made, plus after 10 months of working there with no real progression, it’s time for a change, and change I did.

The thing that interest me about my new role is that I will be dealing with higher end server hardware from multiple vendors. Servers aren’t new to me but I’ll be learning about blade servers and taking charge of over a thousand physical machines over various locations which could  be a challenge for me. Understanding the technical terminology and working under a somewhat uncompromising management framework could prove tedious, but I guess that is what I am here for – being the bridge between Singtel and the Vendor and their vendors. I guess this is where I can really study for my IT certifications. Its a two years contract, which means I don’t really have to worry about looking for a job within the next two years (hopefully).

Oh, I am also staying in SG. We are slowly moving stuff back to SG and doing minor renovation of the flat. At the very least internet has been installed. I choose Fibre 1gbps on MyRepublic for fast internet connection plus the “No Bittorent throttling” promise (but mainly because I have “problems” with the other telcos). We even installed LAN lines so that we could connect directly to the network via gigabit Ethernet. I’ve converted the old home PC to a Kodi-box/Media Server, but too bad my mom don’t really know how to use it.. maybe it’s just a hassle to use a wired keyboard and mouse. I could grab my wireless keyboard and mouse from JB, its in one of the boxes at the M Floor.

As for my technical knowledge, I am slowly but surely trying to get my solo lab up and running. Maybe just buy an old Lenovo X220 laptop and upgrade to 16gb of RAM, buy a new 1TB hard drive and install Windows 7 and VMware workstation. Using that I’ll play around with it to create multiple virtual servers and try out the practical exercises on both wintel servers and Linux as well. Maybe I could create 4 or more VMs, 2 Servers and 2 Desktops, just to play around and learn. Space is going to be a bit of an issue, so I’m going to keep my Lab footprint to a laptop with multiple VMs.

Yeah, so I guess that’s it for now. Maybe I’ll write more on a later date.

bleh – part 1

Longer posts comming soon. I have not typed in a long time and I’ll admit my fingers get kinda rusty after a while. Busy with nothing important or interesting (as usual). Oh yeah, last week both Ramadan 2016 and Euro 2016 kicked off, sleepless nights and hazy daytimes, here I come.

New year, New beginnings.

….. not yet the new year, but it’s good to prepare early.

Oh Hi everybody (Tommy Wiseau voice), welcome to my new (old) webpage/blog/clearing house for my online based stuff. Normally I won’t do all these sort of things but I guess today would be a good time as any to setup this page.. I have been wanting to do something with my domain for almost forever. The reason behind this sudden change is abit funny:

I have accidentally screwed up my configurations for my sisters WordPress blog, which I am also setting up, forgetting that I have a blog at but i set up her website with (names changed to protect the fragile ego of the one setting this thing up). I guess I have forgotten about the whole configuring of the subdomains thingy to the proper folder thingy so that it won’t accidentally overwrite everything. Awesome.

I have checked with my webhost on data recovery and it seems like they can’t do all that much about the overwritten blogposts, so I will need to go through the cache of the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. Thankfully they have most of my more noteworthy posts saved there, and also some posts which I might be abit hesitant in wanting to recover. Some posts are better off lost in the Net, but as we all know, that is not how the internet is set up, am I right NSA?

So whats my plans for this page? Well, content takes time to generate and I am kinda short on time (I mean, between the working and sleeping). Working at a Dilbert style workplace can really eat into your wanting to engage other projects as well.

I am most probably wanting to get my Class 2B over and done with, it’s been on a ten month long hold as I have to atone for my qestionalble financial actions. I also plan to get my class 3 as well, its the more usefull of licences as I will be able to drive a car. Car “ownership” in SG is kinda important in the field I am working on so I’ll need it done ASAP, along with a whole lot of stuff I have in mind. Certifications also are on my mind, but the finances better be there or else it’s just such a waste of mental energy.

Its the rainy month of December, maybe I wanna skip the Class 2B and do it in the dryer months. Just maybe.

Ok, better get back to setting up my sister’s eCommerce site. Who knows, I could get paid selling webspace?
